Wine: South Africa's wine redemption

22 January 2012 by Tomás Clancy, Sunday Business Post

Dr Eilis Cryan is on a one-woman mission to bring bespoke South African wine to Ireland.

One woman, however, has made it her mission to concentrate solely on handcrafted Burgundy-style South African wine.  A Galway doctor Eilis Cryan became interested in South African wines after travelling to the country in 1998. She founded Kinnegar Wines on her return, and began a 13-year engagement with some of the bestwinemakers and wine estates in South Africa. Over the years she has amassed Irish agencies for wine estates that are fought over tooth and nail in other jurisdictions.

“What’s your favourite wine fault?” was the question put to me in my capacity as one of the judges of at the recent Vinovarsity 2011 by master of ceremonies and Backsberg marketing coordinator Harry Haddon. I think he meant to ask “What’s the fault that gets you most riled up?” and was expecting me to say spoilage yeast Brettanomyces.

Dr Paul Cluver III

"Our Pinot Noir needs a new name,” mutters Paul Clüver IV, managing director of Paul Cluver Wines in Elgin. “People tend to call it our ‘ordinary’ Pinot and it’s anything but ordinary!”

He’s right about that, with the 2009’s latest achievement being a 4 Star rating in Winemagazine’s annual Pinot Noir review, published in the June issue. He may also be right about the Seven Flags 2008 being the estate’s “culmination of dedication to the practice of viticulture and winemaking” given that it is this year’s top-scoring Pinot with 4½ Stars.
