Rocking Horse 2015
Rocking Horse 2015

Tim Atkin writes of this Cape White : The blend of grapes may change from year to year (the 2015 combines Roussanne with Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and a splash of Claudette Blanche), but the quality of this multi- regional wine is very consistent. Refined, leesy and herbal, with notes of honeysuckle, pear and fennel, great texture and vibrant acidity. Drink 2016-19 ABV 13%  93 Pts

White Wine Thorne & Daughters Western Cape € 28,40
Savage Red 2013

Grapes for Duncan's flagship red blend are sourced from a number of hand selected vineyard parcels in the Cape. Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut & Touriga Nacional each make their own contribution to this multi-dimensional wine. Elegance rather than power is a hallmark of this classic northern Rhone style masterpiece. ABV 13% I first tasted the maiden 2011 vintage at dinner with David Trafford a few years ago and it will forever live in my memory.

Savage Follow the Line 2014
Savage Follow the Line 2014

Jamie Good writes "This is sensational. It’s a new red wine from Duncan Savage, and it’s a blend of 58% Cinsault, 21% Grenache and 21% Syrah. We were served it blind and I reckoned it was a supremely elegant warmer climate red, but I didn’t get any further than that. It’s such a beautiful wine, but it will be incredibly hard to find, alas. I reckon it’s a new South African great. It proves once again that Cinsault is a serious variety in South Africa.

Very fine, expressive and pure with lovely refined red and black cherries, and a lovely floral perfume. There’s some tautness to the palate, but also a bit of silky texture. Purity and finesse are the hallmarks of this super-elegant red wine. 96/100"  ABV 13%

Flotsam & Jetsam Cinsault 2016
Flotsam & Jetsam Cinsault 2016

This Cinsault, like its Chenin Blanc opposite number, comes from the same stable of Chris & Suzaan Alheit and is a real treat. The grapes come  from a very special old vineyard in Darling shared among a group of young superstar winemakers including Duncan Savage, Donovan Rall, Ian Naudé & Francois Haasbroek. This is no blockbuster but a refined and elegant wine with great purity of fruit. So approachable, maybe too drinkable but the good news is the ABV is only 12%. Best enjoyed slightly chilled.

Flotsam & Jetsam Heirloom Chenin Blanc 2016
Flotsam & Jetsam Heirloom Chenin Blanc 2016

This beautifully bright and vibrant Chenin Blanc by the already iconic Chris and Suzaan Alheit made as a side project "hopefully to show that 'work horse' grapes can make lekker wine". Chenin Blanc certainly has been used as a work horse in the Cape and we certainly see far too much generic, cheap, poor quality chenin on supermarket shelves giving it a bad name. However, in good hands, it can be magnificent as in the case of the Aheit's Cartology and many others. This one certainly punches well above it's weight.  Parker 92pts, Christian Eedes 92 pts. ABV 13.5%

Doran Chenin Blanc 2012
Doran Chenin Blanc 2012

This is the first vintage of this Chenin Blanc from  30 yr old bush vines by Irish man Edwin Doran in partnership with the legendary Andre Badenhorst -  a beautiful example of a South African Chenin blanc, very balanced & restrained with rich tropical fruits, honeyed apple. An elegant food wine.

Mullineux Straw Wine 2011
Mullineux Straw Wine 2011

This delicious straw wine, which has garnered  three 5 stars awards from Platter in its first four vintages, is fast gaining icon status. Jancis Robinson says: "Super rich but glorious. Dried apricots but in lush mode rather than the very tight, crisp mode of Tokaj. So clean! You (almost) taste the sweat that went into this. Long and rich and nervy."  The Chenin Blanc grapes are picked at normal ripeness  and optimal acidity. They are then dried outdoors on racks to concentrate the sugars, acidity and flavours before a long slow natural fermentation in old barrels. The result is indeed quite simply glorious. ABV only 10%. 375ml.

2012 vinatage has just arrived  - yet another 5 star Platter wine from this years Winery of the Year!  Accolades rolling in from all sides.

Mullineux White 2012
Mullineux White 2012

Blend of very special blocks of Swartland Chenin Blanc, Clairette & Viognier, expertly handcrafted by Chris and Andrea into a Cape benchmark. Subtle aromas and flavours of lemon, apple, peach and spice with added tropical notes from the Clairette & Viognier. Great concentration matched by lively acidity with minerality following through, concentrated, persistent length. So elegant. Drinking beautifully now but will benefit from decanting in the early years of its long life ahead.  ABV 13.5%

Mullineux Syrah 2013
Mullineux Syrah 2013

Now 6th vintage of this splendid Swartland Syrah. The Platter Guide awarded the maiden 2008 vintage 4.5 stars, the 2009 vintage 5 stars and the 2010 vintage 5 stars and Red Wine of the Year  - an incredible performance for young winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux. And the wine really is this good!  Beautifully perfumed with black pepper, dark fruits and spice, full bodied, silky texture and supple tannins. Will evolve over several years but drinking well already. Will benefit from decanting at this stage. Sadly, the production was limited to 1115 cases and worldwide demand high so availability is limited. ABV 13.5%

Martin Moran MW says "perfumed, silky Northern Rhone-like Syrah that would cost twice as much if it came from there"

Kloof Street Chenin 2012
Kloof Street Chenin 2012

This textbook Loire style Chenin Blanc comes from three parcels of 32 to 40 year old bushvines in the Swartland. In keeping with the style of the Kloof Street wines, this freshness, balance and great drinkability. Honey pear and apple mingle with ripe apricot and tropical fruit on the nose doesn't disappoint on the palate with a good body and a generous mouth feel. Jancis Robinson says: "Very rich and racy. Great Stuff!!" ABV 13%

White Wine Mullineux Family Wines Swartland € 19,90
Kloof Street Rouge 2012
Kloof Street Rouge 2012

This blend of Southern Rhone varieties just bursts from the glass - such juicy fruit, liquorice, good coffee with immediate accessibilty, so food friendly yet still quite a serious wine. It is medium to full bodied with a fine texture, firm but approachable tannins and a fresh, energizing finish. A blend of 72% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, 11% Cinsault, 4% Carignan, this Kloof Street Rouge is sourced from 14 - 45 year old vines over five different vineyard parcels in the Swartland. Best served at 16 to 18 C, this wine will benefit from decanting when drunk within the first 3 years after bottling. ABV 14%.
