Thelema Riesling 2008
Thelema Riesling 2008 The unsung hero at Thelema and the cellar master’s choice. Bone dry and with a moderate 13% alcohol, the pure limey/peppery raciness shines centre-stage and resoundingly long. While striking and enjoyable now, this is nothing compared with the complexities which will continue to evolve over the coming years. The 2008 vintage is showing younger Riesling character at this stage but is already showing the qualities for another long haul. ’93 & ’94 vintages are now drinking beautifully though sadly very rare now. 14.5% Read more ... Lurton Malbec Reserva 2010

Malbec is the traditional red grape of Argentina having travelled from France in the 19th century. Here it seems much more at home and makes lovely fruity wine with lots of red summer berries- raspberries and strawberries. Tannins are riper and finer than the French equivalent (mainly Cahors, dying out in Bordeaux). Very well balanced and elegant with a long finish.

Paul Cluver Close Encounter Riesling 2012
Paul Cluver Close Encounter Riesling 2012

The second of three Rieslings made on the Paul Cluver farm. It is so named because it came very close to being uprooted when Riesling was less well recognised in the Cape. The farm manager also had a close encounter in the vineyard when an unexpected local train came through the vineyard one day and almost bisected both him and his tractor. Thankfully, Christian, the tractor, and most importantly, the vineyard all survived! This is a special selection from a high level vineyard. The resulting wine has wonderful purity of fruit, minerality, complexity and the very pleasant advantage of a lower alcohol content - 9.5%. Great to drink alone, with fish, shellfish and particularly with oriental or spicy dishes. Such a special wine. Ageing elegantly and lots of life for quite some time to come.

Piedra Negra 2008
Piedra Negra 2008

Malbec but in a class of its own. Old vines grow in black volcanic soil (hence the name) high in the Andes. This deeply coloured wine is packed with flavours and new ones seem to constantly evolve in the glass from red summer berries to chocolate, mocha, tobacco …… A magnificent wine with a long life ahead.

Red Wine Lurton Wines, Mendoza, Argentina Mendoza € 34,00
Paul Cluver Gewurtztraminer 2012
Paul Cluver Gewurtztraminer 2012

This is a most beautiful, perfumed, elegant, delicate, ethereal wine. One could simply savour it's aroma without ever even tasting it but that would be a mistake. It has all the flavour characteristics one expects from a gewurtz but nothing of the big, sometimes blowsy, blockbuster qualities that one sometimes finds. As a bonus, it  is only 12% ABV. Lovely slightly chilled as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to fusion food styles.  Delicious.

Chacayes 2004

This has to be the real star of the Argentinean pack. A new blend of Malbec with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, intensely flavoured with liquorice spice and powerful mulberry and plum fruitiness held in check by a wall of dark, bittersweet cocoa and toast. 92 points from both Parker and Wine Enthusiast and four stars in Decanter. Only 500 cases produced. Drink now to 2015. Will blossom with the years. One of the best wines ever-made in Argentina.

Sijnn 2010
Sijnn 2010

This very exciting red blend from this new vineyard area has been lauded by Jancis Robinson. Southern Rhone varietals Shiraz & Mourvedre combine with the Portuguese Touriga Nacional & Trincadeira and a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon to create a big, broad silky wine with layers of complexity and deep minerality from the very poor stony soils. This is a real new star and only in its fourth vintage. Drinking beautifully but will keep if you can.

James Molesworth of Wine Spectator says "There are few wines I would push people to seek out - I like to point to quality and then let consumers find what style of wine they enjoy drinking. In this case though, I think it's important for anyone who appreciates the efforts that go into making wine to try and track down a few bottles of Sijnn. There are few projects that epitomize such a soulful, pioneering approach to winemaking."

Wine Spectator 93pts, Tim Atkin 93pts.

Mullineux White 2012
Mullineux White 2012

Blend of very special blocks of Swartland Chenin Blanc, Clairette & Viognier, expertly handcrafted by Chris and Andrea into a Cape benchmark. Subtle aromas and flavours of lemon, apple, peach and spice with added tropical notes from the Clairette & Viognier. Great concentration matched by lively acidity with minerality following through, concentrated, persistent length. So elegant. Drinking beautifully now but will benefit from decanting in the early years of its long life ahead.  ABV 13.5%

Mullineux Syrah 2013
Mullineux Syrah 2013

Now 6th vintage of this splendid Swartland Syrah. The Platter Guide awarded the maiden 2008 vintage 4.5 stars, the 2009 vintage 5 stars and the 2010 vintage 5 stars and Red Wine of the Year  - an incredible performance for young winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux. And the wine really is this good!  Beautifully perfumed with black pepper, dark fruits and spice, full bodied, silky texture and supple tannins. Will evolve over several years but drinking well already. Will benefit from decanting at this stage. Sadly, the production was limited to 1115 cases and worldwide demand high so availability is limited. ABV 13.5%

Martin Moran MW says "perfumed, silky Northern Rhone-like Syrah that would cost twice as much if it came from there"

Kloof Street Chenin 2012
Kloof Street Chenin 2012

This textbook Loire style Chenin Blanc comes from three parcels of 32 to 40 year old bushvines in the Swartland. In keeping with the style of the Kloof Street wines, this freshness, balance and great drinkability. Honey pear and apple mingle with ripe apricot and tropical fruit on the nose doesn't disappoint on the palate with a good body and a generous mouth feel. Jancis Robinson says: "Very rich and racy. Great Stuff!!" ABV 13%

White Wine Mullineux Family Wines Swartland € 19,90
De Trafford Merlot 2008

Fully mature, with mint, bay and warm cocoa notes leading the way for a core of macerated plum and blackberry flavors. Mint and cedar details hold sway through the finish. Quite subtle with alluring fruit and a fine-grained structure. Still drinking beautifully.

Doran Chenin Blanc 2012
Doran Chenin Blanc 2012

This is the first vintage of this Chenin Blanc from  30 yr old bush vines by Irish man Edwin Doran in partnership with the legendary Andre Badenhorst -  a beautiful example of a South African Chenin blanc, very balanced & restrained with rich tropical fruits, honeyed apple. An elegant food wine.

Christine 2007
Christine 2007

Buitenverwachting's flagship is a Cape fixture as one of its best classically blended Bordeaux style blends. This vintage consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Malbec. A luxuriously silky and exquisitely balanced wine. Certainly more old world than new world. Already enjoying a long and happy future.

Kloof Street Rouge 2012
Kloof Street Rouge 2012

This blend of Southern Rhone varieties just bursts from the glass - such juicy fruit, liquorice, good coffee with immediate accessibilty, so food friendly yet still quite a serious wine. It is medium to full bodied with a fine texture, firm but approachable tannins and a fresh, energizing finish. A blend of 72% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, 11% Cinsault, 4% Carignan, this Kloof Street Rouge is sourced from 14 - 45 year old vines over five different vineyard parcels in the Swartland. Best served at 16 to 18 C, this wine will benefit from decanting when drunk within the first 3 years after bottling. ABV 14%.
